Tsumeb's History

the capital of the Oshikoto region on northern Namibia, the world's premier mineral locality and a unique town bursting with social and economic opportunities.

From its earliest beginnings as a town in the early 1900s, Tsumeb established itself as the business, agricultural and financial centre of the northern part of the country. Because of its ideal 'crossroads' location enroute to the more populated northern regions, Tsumeb has been able to link tourist destinations, farming communities, mining operations and commercial centres by road, rail and air.

The Tsumeb Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with the Tsumeb Town Council, has launched an aggressive campaign to attract new investors to Tsumeb and environs.

Prime locations of investments have been identified throughout Tsumeb and are being made more available through the combined efforts of the Tsumeb Chamber of Commerce, the Tsumeb Municipality and Ongopolo Mining and Processing Ltd. (OMPL). OMPL took over from Tsumeb Corporation Ltd., which mined a rich ore pipe for copper, zinc, lead, silver, germanium, cadmium and a variety of crystals, before going into liquidation in 1998 due to a number of reasons. OMPL now runs a smelter, processing ore brought to town from other Ongopolo mines in the area.

Tsumeb has a large, diverse and skilled workforce from which to draw. It is safe to conduct business because of the presence of an active police force and numerous private security firms. Tsumeb also has a variety of professional services, from accountants and lawyers to plumbers and mechanics.

Property is available for prospective entrepreneurs, and Tsumeb has plenty of housing available, as well as land designated for both residential and commercial use. Tsumeb is considered by many to be one of the best places to settle in Namibia. This mainly due to the friendliness of the residents and the high standard of living. A large segment of the population has been here for generations, which contributes to the solid population base. It is also an aesthetically pleasing town and is well planned. Tsumeb is renowned for its spacious public park in the central business district and for its attractive streets, lined with colorful jacaranda trees and bougainvillaea. It is also one of the few places outside Windhoek that is well-stocked and equipped.

As you surf through the site you will find that Tsumeb has many exciting opportunities just waiting to be explored.
