Religion Absolute freedom of religion exists in Nambia, resulting in a number of denominations being reprsented in Tsumeb. About 90% of Namibia's population are Christian and church services are presented in all commonly spoken languages, including English, Africaans and German, as well as other indigenous languages. Education There are numerous kindergardens, primary and secondary schools in Tsumeb, which compare favorably with other schools in Namibia. Children receive quality schooling from professionally trained teachers according to the Cambridge System. Adult education is also offered through the Adult Education Centre, which resorts under the Ministry of Higher Education, Training and Employment Creation to assist adults in furthering their education. The University of Namibia also has representation in Tsumeb for students who would like to take up distance learning. A Teacher's Resource Centre is also at the disposal of students and teachers alike. A Community Skills Development Centre, or Cosdec Tsumeb, was established in 1998 in response to the high unemployment rate in the region, particularily in the wake TCL's closure. Its motto is: 'Fighting poverty through the hands-on skills training and aiming at the establishment of micro-enterprises.' The development centre is community-owned, managed and administered and, targets out-of-school youth with technical training, including those who have not completed Grade 11 and 12. Courses are open to all with basic literacy and numeracy. Part of the aim of the Cosdec System is to openup informal sector and small and medium enterprise opportunities by promoting basic business skills. Training is demand-led, competence based and responsive to community needs. Cosdec Tsumeb offers courses in bricklaying and plastering, computers, business entrepreneurship, motor mechanics, needlework, welding, and carpentry and joinery. In addition there are a number of businesses offering computer courses in Tsumeb. A public/community library is at the disposal of the town's residents. Recreation and Leisure Tsumeb has plenty to offer in terms of recreation, leisure and learning activities, as can be seen by the many different clubs and organizations that have been established and continue to have active members, namely:
Health and Social Services Tsumeb, with its health care facilities, serves as an important centre for the Oshikoto Region. There is one private and one state hospital in town, plus four main clinics in and around Tsumeb. There are three private medical practitioner's offices in town, as well as two dental offices, two pharmacies and and a physical therapist. The Tsumeb Women's and Children Centre provides shelter and counselling for victims of rape and abuse. TOV is a Community Based Organisation in Tsumeb, Namibia, which is providing physical, emotional and educational support to school age children who are orphaned or in other ways vulnerable as a direct result of the affect of HIV/AIDS on themselves and their families. Currently, the State Hospital is being renovated and extended to improve its effectiveness. At present it only has the capacity of a health care centre to treat patients. The newly remodeled hospital will soon have the same ability as other hospitals to treat patients. The improvements will include upgrading to 90 beds, a new materity ward, an Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an improved operating theater, a children's ward, new offices and out-patient facilities, a dental office and an incinerator. In addition an X-ray and sonar machine will be installed. The State Hospital is active in health campaigns and participates each year in the national polio-eradication campaign. Three medical doctors perform abdominal and seizure operations. Other major cases are transferred to the state hospitals in Windhoek or Oshakati. One fully equipped ambulance is on costant standby as well as one car that is used for transporting patients from one medical centre to another.
