TSUMEB INFORMAL BUSINESS SECTOR

Facts & Figures Municipal Services Informal Business Sector Town Council

The Tsumeb Municipality is currently upgrading the informal market at the location of Nomtsoub, which is located a few kilometres northwest of the town centre. Efforts to develop the market are also being made by the Informal Traders (Okapana) Committee, The Urban Trust of Namibia and the Commonwealth Local Government Forum.

The market is the largest income generator for the poor, and currently provides a living for 234 families. Since the closure of Tsumeb Corporatio Ltd. (TCL) in 1998, the town's major employer at that time, many people who lost their jobs had to rely on the informal market as a source of employment.

It has been proposed to provide a further 200 selling spaces, under cover, to improve overall management and accountability, to establish food hygiene standards and to organize recycling facilities for wast products. The market, currently owned by the Municipality, is run by the community and the community's involvement in its development, though the market committee and market operators, is seen as the key to its future sustainability.
