Labour
Tsumeb boasts a large pool of skilled, semi skilled and unskilled labour, with immediate availability, and investors are encouraged to tape this resource.
Currently, Tsumeb has a high unemployment rate, largely as a result of the earlier closure of the Tsumeb Mine (formally owned by Tsumeb Corporation Ltd. - TCL), which was the largest employer in town. Although the reopening of the mine in 2000 bu Ongopolo Mining and Processing Ltd. (OMPL) helped alleviate the situation somewhat, there is still a large and eager workforce readily available. A Labour Office under the management of the Ministry of Labour was opened in 2001 to provide important services for employers and employeees alike, specifically targeting the unemployment situation. This office is an easy point of first contact when seeking employees. Investores are also encouraged to meet with labour officials to discuss various worker concerns and employment strategies before hiring workers, which helps foster an atmosphere of cooperation between the investor and workers. The Labour Office also plays an important role in informing new employees of their obligations and duties, and plays an instrumental role in encouraging employees to work had, underlining the importance of having a job. Employers are welcome to obtain a copy of the Labour Act of 1992 from the Labour Office. This document provides the employer with all the necessary information about labour laws and rights of employers and employees. Labour Office P.O. Box 1331 Tsumeb Unions The National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) is the umbrella organization for all trade unions in Nambia. Workers in Tsumeb are, by and large, represented by four associated unions: NANTU: Namibian National Teachers Union MANWU: Metalwork and Allied Workers' Union (for mechanics) MUN: Mineworkers' Union of Nambibia NAPU: Namibian Public Workers' Union (for municipal, hospital and parastatal workers) Housing Ample, good quality brick houses are available for the middle to higher income groups in suburbs with proper water and electricity infrastructure. As with any developing town, some difficulty is being experienced to house all people of the lower income group. However, owing to progressive and structural action taken in this regard, a lot of progress has been made to house the poor. A very successful measure in this regard is the 'Build-Together' program where community members work together with the Town Council to try and find ways of building their own homes. Office Space Tsumeb offers a large variety of office complexes. Many of these offices are located in the Central Business District. The Municipality of Tsumeb also allows businesses to operate offices from residential premises on certain conditions.
